Here's something you don’t see everyday but is useful in talking about construction techniques. Most people don't realize that chimneys and houses are built independently of each other. The picture below shows an 1800’s home with 3 fireplaces that recently was destroyed by a recent hurricane/storm in NJ. There is a cement mixer and construction vehicles in the foreground and the chimneys in the background. It shows the new framing on the first floor being rebuilt around the original chimneys.
