Lintels are structural elements that support the weight of bricks over windows, garages and door openings. They are made of iron and prone to rust as was the case over the garage door opening of this house. When they rust, they lose their supporting abilities and the exterior can further degrade. Like everything else maintenance is essential on a house, whether old or new. This lintel needs to be repainted with a rust inhibitor and the bricks repointed.
